Since January 1, 1999, the West Pomeranian Voivodeship has been one of the sixteen administrative divisions of the country. It is located in the northwestern part of Poland and encompasses 114 municipalities and 21 counties, including 3 city counties (cities with county rights) and 18 rural counties.
It is the fifth-largest region in Poland, with an area of 22,900 km², and the eleventh-largest in terms of population, with 1,640,622 residents, most of whom live in cities (a high percentage—70% of the population—places West Pomerania third in terms of urbanization). It borders Germany to the west, Sweden and Norway to the north across the Baltic Sea, the Pomeranian Voivodeship to the east, and the Lubusz and Greater Poland Voivodeships to the south. The capital of the voivodeship is Szczecin.
